Description
Systematics of the Land and Freshwater Mollusca of the New Hebrides
by
Alan Solem
No ISBN, Library of Congress number 59-13765. Published in 1959 by the Chicago Natural History Museum as Feldiana: Zoology, Volume 43. Hardcover binding, 359 pages not including the 34 plates of black and white, page size photographs, their keys, and numerous figures in the text. The page size is about 5.5 by 9 inches, 14 by 23 cm.
This book documents completely the terrestrial and freshwater mollusks found in what is now called Vanuatu. It is a technical survey of these animals and will appeal mostly to professional malacologists and, advanced conchologists. It is profusely illustrated and contains 34 full page size plates of specimen shells in black and white photographs and drawings, including some of the anatomy of these shells. Since the book is, of the date of this write-up, more than 60 years old, the photographic quality is not up to today's standards. But, they are adequate for shell identification. Solem's discussion of the mollusks is first-rate, as it is in his other works. The book also contains many maps, charts, tables, and drawings. This is a used copy that can readily pass as a new book. It has some slight rubbing from shelf ware along its edges. I was unable to find another offer for this book in the USA. I found three copies for sale in Europe at higher prices.
