Multiform Australian Volutes
by Frank Abbottsmith
This is a 1974 reprint of the original 1969 edition, published by Webb Tide Press in Ohio, USA. It is presented in a spiral-bound paperback format spanning 131 pages, with content exclusively printed on the right-hand side of each page. The dimensions are approximately 8.5 by 13.25 inches (21 by 33 cm).
Abbottsmith's work has significantly influenced my perspectives on the speciation of Australian Volutes and shells in general. The book explores the idea that shells with limited veliger distribution, settling in specific geographic areas, may evolve distinctive patterns unique to those regions. Abbottsmith illustrates and describes this phenomenon, coining the term 'geomorphic forms' for these unique shell patterns. Despite being often referred to as separate species, subspecies, or forms without taxonomic validity, these variations showcase the author's deep insights into the subject.
The hand-drawn illustrations by Abbottsmith, while somewhat crude and occasionally outlandish, effectively emphasize the diverse characteristics of the shells. Each drawing is accompanied by detailed explanations of the shells' localities, patterns, and colors, providing valuable context. Abbottsmith assigns names to these forms for easy reference, but he wisely refrains from attributing any scientific validity to these names.
This copy is a used edition, maintaining good and very usable condition despite its age. While the covers show signs of toning, the book's interior remains remarkably bright. As the first US printing of the original Australian edition from five years prior, this copy appears to be unaltered, distinguishing it from a later hardcover edition. Given the limited production of these books, particularly the first US printing, they are now challenging to find in any condition.
