Description
Marine Prosobranch Gastropods From Oceanic Islands Off Brazil
by
José H. Leal
ISBN 90-73348-11-0, 1991, Backhuys/UBS, Oegstgeest, the Netherlands, paperback, 418 pages, about 7¾ by 9¾ inches, (about 17 by 24.5 cm), 23 full-page plates of black and white photos many in extreme close up and many in SEM scans.
This is a book that should be in the reference library of everyone who is interested in the shells of the Western Atlantic, but it is, unfortunately, a very difficult book to find. Very few copies were printed and it has become over the years one of those books that you know about but that you never can buy. This copy is the first one that I can remember seeing since the book went out of print shortly after its publication date. Dr. Leal is today a vital part of the National Shell Museum in Sanibel, Florida, and has been for many years its' curator. Those of us who know him know the finely detailed research that he does. This work was his thesis which enabled him to earn his Doctorate degree in malacology. The work records 297 species of marine Gastropods from the 4 offshore island locations in this study. This book is in almost new condition with the sole problem being a tiny bent edge at the top front corner of the front cover. This publication had very limited printing and it is very difficult to find a copy of it today. This copy is the first one we've had in many a long time.
