Description
Marine Molluscs of Madeira
The Living Molluscs of the Province of Madeira
Madeira and Selvagens Archipelago
by
W. Segers, F. Swinnen, R. De Prins
ISBN 9789053497692, published in 2009 by Snoeck Publishers, Belgium, hardcover, about 8.25 by 11.5 inches, 20by 29.5 cm., 611 pages, includes 90 full-page color photo plates (a few are SEM photo scans), includes maps, charts, systematic tables, and a few color photos showing the topography of the islands.
This book is a very well researched guide to the approximately 750 species of marine mollusks found in the waters of this isolated Archipelago. Of the species found 150 are new records, 50 are (as of the date of this book) unidentified. An additional 100 records were doubtful or rejected by the authors and were not included in the book. The information about the shells is thoroughly written and in a standard that is increasingly absent in so many books today. The photographs are also of a very high quality. The book covers mollusks of all the major classes found in these islands that are found off the coast of Morocco, north of the Canary Islands, and east of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. When this book was published it came out at a very high price, if I remember correctly it was selling for about $189.00. It apparently did not sell very well and a few years the publisher "dumped" the remaining stock of books onto the market. The price of the book plummeted and flooded the market. And, through today the price for this book is far lower than and comparable book you can find today. This copy of the book is in new condition and books in similar condition are scarce.
