Description
Freshwater Molluscs of Venezuela
And Their Medical and Veterinary Importance
edited by
Jean-Pierre Pontier
ISBN 9783939767619, 2015 publication by ConchBooks, Harxheim, Germany, hardcover in laminated board covers, A4 size - about 21 by 30 cm (8¼ by 11¾ inches) 228 pages include 110 color photo plates and 116 figures, maps and drawings within the text.
This is an unusual book that bridges the fields of malacology with human and animal medical research. The editor is a malacologist known for his other books on the Caribbean mollusks. This book contains the work of 8 other people who mainly are in the field of medical research. From the aspect of malacology which will be of greater interest to those of you reading this review it is a study of 49 species of gastropods and 16 species of Bivalves of which a total of 14 species are thought to be endemic to Venezuela, 39 of which are native species and 12 as introduced. The photographic plates of these shells are of top quality and the numerous photos that show the habitat and the interrelationship of these shells with the humans and with animal species that inhabit this region. There are fully written descriptions of these shells, and a wealth of information is provided on their impact and importance as part of the ecosystem in which they live.
