Description
Cowries of the World
by
C.M. (Pat) Burgess
ISBN 9780620054836, published in 1985 by Gordon Verhoef, Seacomber Publications, Cape Town, South Africa in 1985. Hardcover, about 8 by 11.75 inches, about 20 by 29.5 cm., 289 pages, contains 20 full page size color photographic plates, smaller size color photos included with the text of each species, most with two or more color photos of the specimens and/or photos of the living animals, additional phots and drawings included in an extensive introductory section,
This is the second of Burgess' two major works on the Cypraea and there are many collectors today who find that this book is still the "state of the art" publication on this popular family of shells. The book is very well illustrated and descriptions are comprehensive for these 202 species that the author considers to be valid There are distribution maps for each of these shells and there are other plates showing abnormalities and melanistic and rostrate shells as well as taxa considered to be invalid. This is a used book and it has a small chips at the bottom of the spine on its back side, and another on the top front edge of the binding. Although this book has been surpassed by the books by Lorenz, especially his brilliant 2 volume set, "Cowries; A Guide to the Gastropod Family Cypraeidae", Burgess' book provides a great foundation for anyone seriously interested in an earlier look at these beautiful and highly collectable shells. It is also interesting to see that were shells that were considered to be rare in 1985 that today are to some degree or less common today and, of course the converse of this is also true since many shells that were thought to be common then, are not easy to obtain today.
